Franchisee Scott Keeney hired Kurzman Architecture to design his Freshii restaurant at 111 W. Jackson Street in Chicago’s financial district right next to the Chicago Board and Trade office. Occupying the first floor of a high rise office building, the design fit into an existing lease space of only 1,300 square feet and yet through masterful space planning, the restaurant feels relatively generous in its accommodations including two accessible male and female restrooms and ample seating areas of a variety of types including outdoor seating that greatly expands its’ realm to participate in the streetscape of Jackson Boulevard with its high pedestrian traffic. Kurzman Architecture processed the project with the Chicago Self-Certification permitting process and meet the strict requirements of the health department for food service. Kurzman Architecture also coordinated reviews and construction with the landlords staff to correctly utilize their hot water heating system, their high-rise fire alarm system and finish and signage requirements. Plumbing was also carefully coordinated with waffle slab construction to avoid disturbing the structural integrity of the floor system.
